The Legend of Loch Katrine
Dense woodland surrounds much of Loch Katrine, and along its quieter shores the ground rises gently into old paths that once carried travellers through the Trossachs. Among these routes, local tradition speaks of a place where gold was hidden during a time of sudden flight and uncertainty in the Highlands.
A small group moving north through the glen was said to be carrying valuables intended for allies beyond the mountains. Realising they were being followed, they chose a secluded stretch of shoreline near the loch and buried the gold beneath stones and tree roots, marking the place only in ways they themselves could recognise.
They never returned. No record explained what became of them, and the location of the hiding place passed quickly into uncertainty. What remained instead was the belief that something of value still rested somewhere between the forest edge and the water.
Walkers later described noticing unusual markings on isolated rocks along narrow paths above the loch. Some believed these were signs left by the travellers themselves, though no one could agree whether they pointed toward the shoreline or deeper into the surrounding woodland.
There were also stories of sudden mist forming without warning in the same quiet coves where people attempted to search for the hidden gold. Even those familiar with the landscape said the shoreline could appear altered in these moments, as if distances shifted slightly along the water’s edge.
One account tells of a fisherman who noticed a faint metallic glimmer beneath loose soil near a sheltered inlet during early morning light. When he returned later with others, the place appeared completely undisturbed, and no trace of the discovery could be found again.
Over time, the story of the treasure became less about what had been hidden and more about why it was never recovered. Some believed the gold had simply been lost, while others thought the landscape itself had taken it into its keeping.
Today, Loch Katrine is known for its still beauty and quiet forests, yet stories of hidden gold somewhere along its shores continue to be shared in the Trossachs — suggesting that not every path beside the loch leads where it seems to.
