Yester Castle (Goblin Hall) – Scotland’s Castle of Dark Legends

Long before Yester Castle fell into ruin, the hill on which it stands was feared. Local memory did not linger on towers or walls, but on what was believed to exist beneath them. The ground itself was said to be hollow, shaped by something that did not belong to the daylight world.

In the 13th century, the castle was held by Hugh de Giffard, a nobleman whose reputation travelled further than his lands. Medieval writers hinted at his fascination with forbidden knowledge, while local folklore named him openly as a warlock. It was said that de Giffard sought power not only through stone and steel, but through secret rites performed beyond human sight.

The legend tells that he demanded a vast chamber beneath the castle — a hall unlike any other. When ordinary labour could not achieve such a task, darker forces were summoned. In a single night, without the sound of tools or voices, the earth was believed to open and close again. By dawn, Goblin Hall was said to be complete.

Villagers claimed the chamber had been built by goblins or demons, bound by ritual to serve their master. After sunset, strange echoes were heard rising from the hill, and pale lights were seen where no torches burned. Animals avoided the slopes, and few people dared to approach the castle once darkness fell.

What gives this legend its enduring power is that Goblin Hall truly exists. Beneath the ruins lies a vast stone chamber, carved deep into the hillside and surviving to this day. One underground chamber of Goblin Hall remains accessible, while the deeper section — once reached by descending stone steps — is now sealed by fallen boulders, cutting off the darkness below.

No record explains why such a structure was built, nor what purpose it served. In the absence of answers, fear and imagination filled the silence left by history.

Today, Yester Castle stands quiet and abandoned. Yet its name still carries the weight of the old stories — of stone shaped in a single night, of shadows beneath the earth, and of a hall that was never meant to be fully revealed.

Some places fade into history.
Others remain, waiting beneath the ground.
